The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Psalm 27:1
We can knock ourselves down before we ever get to our goal. Our worst enemies can lie within us-- worry and fear. My Grandmother Walker used to say, "If you see three troubles coming down the road, two of them will fall off into the ditch even before they reach you. And as the last one gets closer and comes into focus, then you'll realize that it was just a small thing and never had a chance to get at you in the first place."
The Psalmist knew about worry and fear. He, like Grandma Walker, tries to help us get a grip on our fearful enemy that is the cause of self-doubt. The Psalmist is telling us to let the Lord's light into the dark recesses of our minds where fear attempts to lodge and hide. Go ahead and say out-loud, "The Lord is the stronghold of my life!" Experience the strength of God's presence within you as assurance.
