“For judgment I have come into this word,
so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind” John 9:39
There sat the new and attractive small bottle of Miracle perfume on the counter while I was washing up before dinner. I found myself spraying a little bit out into the room so that our miracle could be experienced. The miracle smelled like a combination of fresh and spicy florals, with undertones of amber and jasmine. I wonder how the sweet smell of a miracle smelled to the man who had been blind from birth.
The Scriptures tell us that Jesus mixed some spit with dirt for a bit of mud to cover each eye of the blind man. Next, Jesus told the blind man to go and wash in the pool of Siloam (which means Sent). While the man was washing he smelled the mud pack and pool water. His miracle smelled of wet dirt and old water. Earthy smells. The same smells that were present at creation miracle when we were formed by God so that He would not be lonely. Similar smells to when the Israelites crossed the river Jordan into the Promised Land to experience the miracle of home life. It was also a smell close to the ones that were present when John the Baptizer was Baptizing hundreds of people, in preparation of The Holy One—Jesus the Christ.
The smell of a miracle is heightened for those who are blind because the blindness creates an increased awareness of smells. Jesus used the healing of the blind man as a pivotal experience in which to speak to all of us about spiritual blindness. Jesus encourages all of us to look openly at our faults, blunders, and sins so that with His help we may experience miracles of character correction, healing, and personal betterment. We’re supposed to be growing in faith in Him and in likeness of Him. For this is why we are Christians. And we are to witness to others about how, with God’s help, we are forgiven, loved and changed. Because when we see how blind we are, it is then when we can smell our miracle.
