God says, "For I know the plans I have for you."

For I know the plans I have for you… A future filled with hope.”  Jeremiah 29:11

God is interested in doing good for us.  How do we connect up with that?  Our text points the way.  Back in Jeremiah’s time, God’s people had been in exile from their home-area.  The people in exile felt that God had no long-term plan for their lives.  They experienced despair.  To the exiles, God seemed to be absent, hidden, unavailable and distant.  Through the prophet Jeremiah the people receive a message from God that they must come, seek and pray—God is available.

Jeremiah’s call to the people is to humble themselves, repent, and concentrate on developing a deep, strong spiritual life that is vitally active; no matter where God’s people are, no matter what God’s people are doing to earn a living, and without regard to whatever appears to be before God’s people.  God is available to instill hope in the midst of despair and will overwrite both the despair and the circumstances which generate it.

God wants to give us daily hope.  This type of hope is ‘shalom’; it is a gift from God that causes inner peace to well up from within us.  We access that through our empowering faith in Jesus Christ.  When we get close to Jesus, we get close to God.  When we receive the gift of hope our spirituality connects up with a robust dynamic of faith.  Hope is available when we ask.
