The starting shot is fired and a dozen runners catapult themselves down the track. They run with every ounce of energy and concentration they can muster. The crowd goes wild!
Screaming fans hold up signs to cheer on their favorites. Coaches line the track shouting instructions. Yet, to the runner only one thing is really in focus-- the goal toward which she is running. Intense concentration on her goal blurs everything else around her. She must not take her eyes from that goal or all is lost.
Aren't we also are living like we're running a race? Life moves quickly along. We too find varied distractions along the way and we must keep our focus on the goal-- Jesus. If we take our eyes off Him we will be slowed or stopped by discouragement, doubt, or confusion.
To run successfully we need to make a conscious decision to look away from all that would distract us. In this sense we need to wear blinders to keep our eyes from wandering. At the same time though, we need to determine to keep our eyes 'fixed' on Jesus. This requires more than a one time decision. We have a commitment to Him that we reaffirm daily.
Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith. Hebrews 12:2
