“The sower sows the Word.” Mark 4:14
Jesus parable of the four soils is popular with new learners. The sower of the seeds encounters a mystery—what will become of each seed planted? While the sower’s responsibility is just to plant the seed, he finds that there are four kinds of soils from which three give great disappointment and a last one exceeds the other three combined.
Had the sower been a soils expert he could have saved himself some time and effort and yet, one surely cannot foresee an outcome from soil just by looking at it. Jesus’ parable does not indicate that picking soils is a part of the process. For instance, rich looking soil may be covering rocks and pebbles that is hardly suitable for planting.
And soil with weeds covering the plot would choke out the tender new sprout from the fertile seed. Could someone have guessed from your life that the Gospel seed would be so well received and take root in you? For some, their unhealthy attitudes of fear, selfishness, and pride are the dampers to faith taking root and flourishing.
The bottom line is that the Gospel seeds that you and I plant in other’s thoughts have potential, real potential. Our willingness to pray and plant seeds are what delights God. Opportunities may not present itself every day to plant seeds and yet Christ has plans for a great harvest ahead. Sewing the Word of God is Holy business for a faithful follower like you. Seeds of faith produce huge returns!
